Chiang Mai students, send us your essays under the title, ‘Once Upon a Time’ for the chance to win this most prestigious national award. The Nation Group and Citylife are the north of Thailand’s organisers of the event and the winning student plus two will be flown to Bangkok to attend the national awards ceremony on 13th February as well as win 10,000 baht. Two runners up will receive 5,000 baht.The overall national winner plus one parent will be flown to Dublin, Ireland. The opening date for submissions is 1st December and closing date, 15th January.

On Monday the 15th there was an extraordinary parliament session to elect the 27th Prime Minister for Thailand. Abhisit Vejjajiva received 235 votes, winning over Pol. Gen. Pracha Promnok, the leader of Puea Pandin party who obtained 198 votes. Abhisit is the leader of the opposition Democrat party and at 44 years of age, now the youngest Prime Minister in Thai history.
By looking at the policies of the Democrat party from the 2007 election campaign, we can catch a glimpse of what might come. Their main movement was called the ‘people agenda’ which included:
1. Development of the people by providing free education from kindergarten to high school or Mathayom 6. The policy also includes free health care, and creating a care centre for children and the elderly.
2. An economic policy that supports agriculture in the countryside, guaranteeing prices, and creating an organisation that supports and provides transportation to the countryside. The policy also includes the stimulation of the economy for the whole country.
3. Solving problems in the south by return justice to the people, supporting the unity between people and government organisations, developing the economy, and providing education.
4. Restoring democracy by reforming politician’s morals, administering the country with justice and responsibility, strengthening peoples’ politics, giving freedom to media and distributing power to local community.
Citylife congratulates the new Prime Minister and sincerely hope that he will lead Thailand through the crisis and restore the country. |
